Data Sharing Framework Community will transfer to Operaton

Hello Operaton Community!

We are excited to announce that our research project, the Data Sharing Framework, is in the process of transitioning from Camunda 7 to Operaton 1.0.0 for our next major upcoming release: DSF 2.0. We are currently testing our application with your 1.0.0-beta-5 release based on Camunda 7.23. See our pull request here.

The DSF was developed within the Medical Informatics Initiative to make routine health data digitally accessible and available for medical research. Our goal is to help establish and maintain a federated research data infrastructure that is use-case agnostic. To achieve this, the Data Sharing Framework integrates a distributed business process engine based on BPMN 2.0 and a FHIR server that functions as a secure mailbox for communication, all built on a distributed peer-to-peer network without central components.

HL7 FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) is a healthcare data exchange standard designed with modern web technologies like REST, JSON, and XML, making it intuitive for developers familiar with API-based integration. It enables seamless interoperability between healthcare systems by modeling clinical and administrative data as modular “resources” that can be easily queried, updated, and linked across platforms.

The Data Sharing Framework is funded and supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Much like the Operaton Community, the DSF is a community-driven project supported by the Medical Informatics Initiative and the Network of University Medicine. The DSF connects over 40 university hospitals and other healthcare and research institutions across Germany.

We would like to thank the Operaton Community for building a truly free and open-source BPMN engine. We’re looking forward to join the community, contribute were possible, and learning from its members.
